ReachLLM Highlights New Research Showing the Growing Gap Between SEO Rankings and AI Search Visibility
New research and industry analysis suggest that traditional search performance does not necessarily translate into visibility in AI-generated answers

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – July 20, 2026 – As AI assistants become an increasingly common starting point for product research, new academic research and industry analysis suggest that traditional search visibility does not automatically translate into visibility within AI-generated answers.

A January 2026 study by researcher Amit Sharma, The Discovery Gap: How Product Hunt Startups Vanish in LLM Organic Discovery Queries, examined 112 Product Hunt startups across 2,240 prompts. The research found that ChatGPT recognized companies when asked about them directly nearly all the time, yet surfaced them in only a small fraction of broader discovery-style queries, highlighting a substantial gap between brand recognition and AI-driven discovery. The study also noted that, within its dataset, discovery performance was influenced by multiple factors beyond traditional optimization signals, underscoring the complexity of AI-powered search.

A broader shift in search behavior has also been identified by industry analysts. In February 2024, Gartner predicted that traditional search engine volume would decline by 25% by 2026 as AI chatbots and virtual agents increasingly serve as substitute answer engines. While overall search demand has proven more resilient than originally forecast, AI-generated answers are changing how users interact with search results. Industry analyses in 2026 estimate that Google’s AI Overviews—now appearing in roughly one in five Google searches—have reduced organic click-through rates by an estimated 61% when they are present, highlighting the growing importance of visibility within AI-generated responses alongside traditional search rankings.

Together, these developments illustrate an emerging distinction between traditional search engine optimization and AI visibility. SEO primarily measures rankings, keywords and organic traffic, while AI visibility focuses on whether a brand is mentioned, cited or recommended when users ask AI platforms for advice, comparisons or purchasing recommendations.

Originally founded in Dubai and now headquartered in San Francisco, ReachLLM helps organizations understand and improve how they appear across leading AI platforms, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. The company tracks brand visibility across AI systems, audits websites for AI-search readiness, implements technical and content improvements, develops AI-focused content strategies, and conducts digital PR campaigns that help build the third-party citations AI models frequently reference when generating answers.

“Research is making one thing clear: appearing in Google search results and appearing in AI-generated recommendations are not the same measurement problem,” said Sohazur Islam, CEO and Co-founder of ReachLLM. “The first step for any organization is understanding where it is—or isn’t—being cited before deciding what improvements to make.”

As AI-powered search continues to evolve, organizations are increasingly monitoring AI citation rates, share of voice and recommendation frequency alongside traditional SEO metrics to better understand how customers discover brands through conversational search experiences.
